What happens to food that "Goes down the wrong pipe" and ends up in your lungs?

There was that story on the news recently about the man who had a seed sprout and begin to grow in his lungs; ive heard of stories similar to this and it got me thinking: what generally happens to misguided items that end up in ones lungs instead of stomach?
