Ow far can we trace the origin of animal sacrifice in the bible?

It depends on what you mean by sacrifice. In the page you quoted, God killed the animals to provide the covering. The next reference is only a page or chapter or two ahead, where Abel brought an animal and offered it as a burnt offering. Cain only brought produce (fruits or vegetables or both). We have no record in Genesis of how or what Adam and Eve sacrificed.
